Winter Park

Yesterday, late afternoon after dropping the girls off to stay and enjoy time with Grandma and Poppie, the rest of our group hopped in the van and headed off to Winter Park to walk and enjoy this quaint town and to find a nice place to eat.
We hadn't realized there was the Autumn Art Festival going on this past weekend, so the area was a bit more crowded than on past visits.  After walking around a bit and looking over the menus at a few restaurants we opted for Italian.

The food was good and after dinner it we took the opportunity to walk and look around as we worked off dinner.  Amber and Eddie wanted to go to Le Macaron store they'd spotted earlier.

Cameron wanted the Chocolatier for his chocolate covered bacon and then the final stop was Starbucks before our evening out came to it's conclusion.  Again, a fun time out before PJ and Daniel head back to their respective homes today.  So glad they had the chance to come down and visit while Amber and Eddie are out here.

Tour of "Old Florida"

After a busy day on Friday and some additional riders in our party, 13 of us piled into the van and headed out on Saturday to tour the Ormond Loop and scenic highway.  It's a little over 30 miles along a narrow highway that dates back to the turn of the century and with it's heavy tree lined road that looks much like it would have back when it was originally laid out.

Dummett Sugar mill Ruins

After this stop, it was back in the van and across the Tomoka River

Our first stop along the route was to see the ruins of the Dummett Plantation Sugar and Rum Mill.
"Ruins" are the key word to the little that is left of this building that dates around 1826, but was destroyed during the Seminole Indian war.  After this short stop, we were back on the highway that crossed the Tomoka River and led to our next stop at Tomoka State Park.  The park is named for the Timucua Indians, who were indigenous to the area at the time the Spanish Explorers first arrived in Florida.  The park had a little store and dock, then after strolling through a demonstration of plant, animal and early Floridian tools we took pictures at the statue that is dedicated to the Timucua then found tables to enjoy our picnic lunch.

Once we finished we were on the road again and drove on down through Ormond beach and over to the coast so we could all stop and let Amber and Eddie put their feet in the Atlantic Ocean.

Nice stop - beautiful day!!

This stop was particularly fun for the girls.  Lauren was really funny with the feel of the course sand on her feet and wasn't too sure about walking on it at first.  The girls loved running from the incoming waves.  After this we headed to the last stop on our tour - the Bulow Plantation Ruins.  This was down a very narrow dirt road that was heavily tree lined before it opened near the water inlet to where the little that was left of the old plantation site laid. The old house with it's slave area was gone and only markers stood to indicate where they had been. Then the mill ruins that originally produced sugar and molasses from the sugar cane was the area we explored the longest on this stop.  Indigo and cotton from crops were also grown on the 2200 acres that was owned by Major Charles W. Bulow in 1821.  The sugar producing mill and home were burned in 1836 during the Seminole War.  Today only the larger chimneys and some of the mill building are left to see.  They also have glass enclosed displays of materials found at the sites and old photos or artistic renderings of the area.  After this stop it was time to head home and gather our supplies for a Bar-B-Q at Pat and Jen's.

While the grill was heating it was pool time:

The girl's decided to do some water color painting instead,  and then it was time to eat.

Once we were done with our meal, we celebrated Amber's birthday, that was actually on the 9th of October, with cake and presents.  It was a long, fun day filled with interesting sites and great company!!!

Amber and Eddie Here

Well after months of planning they are here!!!  We were all so excited to head to the airport on Thursday to pick up Amber and Eddie for their visit.  We've been planning this since we moved to Florida.  On Wednesday Kevin and Cameron picked up the 15 person van we rented since not only are Amber and Eddie visiting, but Kevin's brother Stephen, his son Stevie are here to stay with Pat and Jen, plus Patrick and Jennifer's son's P.J. and Daniel will be here for the weekend too.  It's the first time Kevin's family will get to meet Eddie and to see Amber again after 5 years since our last visit with them in Pennsylvania. So with all the people to carry to the various places we want to visit while they are in Florida, we thought it would be easier with the van.

Our group today with the van behind

We picked Amber and Eddie up Thursday in the early evening from the Orlando Airport.  Then headed for dinner at Don Pablo's restaurant before heading home.  Friday we picked up Stephen, Stevie, Patrick and Jennifer to head to Blue Springs to look around.  Though it's too early for the Manitees to be in the area it was still a nice hike and great place to tour around.  The "Steve's" decided to enjoy the warm water with a swim downstream while the rest of us hiked the trail.

Then when we were done at the Springs we headed to The Swamp House for lunch and to let Amber and Eddie try some Gator bite appetizers before their meals.  It  was good food and a nice place to enjoy it in, before heading to our next stop at Green Springs park.

After that it was home for the girls to get ready for ballet, then back home again for dinner and to relax as we prepare for some more touring of this Florida vacation spot for Amber and Eddie.  We're loving our time with them and everyone else who's been able to visit and make this a really special time together.

Tomorrow we're heading off for some more touring around the old Highway known as "The Loop", that's an old highway built at the turn of the last century with it's scenic views and many historical sites or places of interest along it's route.

Fun and busy first day and a half!!
