Plants and Projects

Just some photos to update what is happening in the new garden and projects around the house.

Things are sprouting and growing well already in the new garden area between the house and the barn. Lynda also has some more seedlings that she has started in our sun room and will be transplanting them soon. Kevin & Cameron are signed up for a class in San Diego next month on raising Tilapia using aquaponics - we have the basic hydroponics system running in the greenhouse, but have been planning from the start to switch to aquaponics and raise fish as soon as we got some experience and training.

The chickens are doing great, we got 7 eggs today and average about 4 each day so we have not had to buy eggs for some time and are starting to give them to Amber and Eddie!

Here's Hannah (who loves to work outside) picking olive leaves from the cut branches.  We dry and grind the leaves for making tea. Olive leaf tea is good for strengthening the immune system and to help alleviate cold symptoms.

Kevin and Cameron have started laying the new flooring in the kitchen.  They should be done this weekend!

Kevin's Birthday!

Today was Kevin's birthday. We enjoyed a cold-rainy day relaxing indoors and watched the Penguins of Madagascar and then Casablanca after dinner. Tomorrow Kevin gets to celebrate again as Amber & Eddie will be here for dinner and their chance to celebrate with us.

Rainy Day and Pumpkin Bread

Making the most of a rainy day by baking more pumpkin bread.  After our trip to Bates Nut Farm back in October we had 5 large pumpkins that over the months I have cooked and pureed.  I have bags of the stuff frozen so we will have plenty for many more loaves of bread in the future.  I finally cooked and pureed the last of the pumkins this week and with todays overcast skies it's perfect baking weather!!
I found this recipe for pumpkin bread at allrecipes.com.  It makes a delicious, moist pumpkin bread.
Since my family likes things really flavorful I double the measurements of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger to really make this bread a treat that they all love.

Here's the recipe as found online:

DOWNEAST MAINE PUMPKIN BREAD

Ingredients:
2 cups pumkin puree or one 15 oz. can
4 eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
2/3 cup water
3 cups sugar
3 1/2 cups flour
2 tsps. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/4 tsp. ground ginger

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).  Grease and flour three  7 X 3 inch loaf pans.
In a large bowl, mix together pumpkin puree, oil, eggs, water and sugar until well blended. In a seperate bowl whisk together all dry ingredients.  Stir the dry ingredients into pumpkin mixture until well blended.  Pour into prepared pans.  Bake for about 50 minutes in the preheated oven. Loaves are done when toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

ENJOY!!!!!

Garden Project Phase 2

Yesterday, Kevin and Cameron installed some fencing around the new project garden area to keep out the critters and dogs. Today, they used some scrap wood material to build a gate with wood that we had from demolition of the old front entry when we added the sunroom a few years ago to the front of the house.

After installing the gate, Lynda then transplanted some of the seedlings she had started and then let the girls plant some seeds of their own.

New Garden Project & Back to Eden Film

This weekend was very busy for us (the entire family), as we started a new garden project between the house and barn. We have known for some time that we were supposed to use our property to supply not just fruits and vegetables for us, but to also use our gardens and experiences to teach others.  We started here with 2-acres of bare land and have worked with raised planting beds,  have a variety of fruit trees and had several traditional vegetable gardens over the years. As part of our experiments/projects we built a greenhouse, started a hydroponics system (made with barrels), and are researching and planning on an aquaponics system using fish - we are looking at the fish being tilapia that we could also eat.

Last week Lynda came across an online site that had a video of a like minded man who lives and gardens in Washington state. After watching the video we were excited about trying his gardening techniques as one of our projects. We ordered the video (although you can watch the entire video free on his site) and started our newest garden project. The site for those of you who are interested is:

www.backtoedenfilm.com

The main concept of the "Back to Eden" project is to use cover (wood chips) over the soil.  We started Friday with Kevin and Cameron using our chipper/shredded on a pile of tree trimming we had. We realized that our project was going to require much more than we would produce in a single day of chipping and decided to go to a local wood recycling center and purchased a truck load (1 cubic yard) of wood chip compost material.

The process can be seen in the following photos:  The pile of wood material, the conveyors and chipping machinery, and the compost.

The next step was to clear the area where we would garden, removing any large weeds, oh and of course Lynda taking the time to paint the fence between the house and the barn that is the back of the new garden area.

After prepping the area we then soaked old newspaper and laid that out over the ground. After the paper was in place we then dumped the compost material on top of the newspaper. The newspaper helps to kill off any weed seed that may be on the found surface and will break down quickly.

While all this work was going on the girls (Hannah & Lauren) enjoyed racing around in the Barbie Jeep and then pulling olive leaves off some of the trimmed branches.  The olive leaf is used for making a tea that helps to reduce cold/flu/sinus symptoms.
The weekend ended with the blessing of a beautiful sunset!

Today (Monday) Lynda screened compost from one of our composted areas and added this to the garden area.  We then had an early "date night" what the kids call our trips to Lowes and Home Depot! To pick up some wood chips (not bark) and some fencing supplies to keep the dogs and other critters out of the garden.  More pictures to follow after we have time to work on the project garden later this week.

Can Punxsutawney Phil be wrong???

Bill Murray w/Phil in the movie Groundhog Day.

Well today on Gobblers Knob in Punxsutawney Pennsylvania Phil the ground hog predicted 6-more weeks of winter.  Well not to argue with Phil, but someone needs to tell our trees and flowers that it is not spring yet!

Bea loves to lay in the sun room soaking up the warmth and it looks like our almond trees are in full bloom along with many other flowers.
